Only the Hertfordshire innings could be completed on the first day, and heavy rain after the completion of the Dorset innings on the second day caused the game to be abandoned. The game between the two sides at Broxbourne in July had been won by Hertfordshire. A tenth wicket partnership of 61 runs between Smart and Bowley took the Dorset total to just two runs short of a first innings lead. It was the closest Dorset came all season to gaining a championship point. Coleman was ill and did not bat on the first day, but bowled successfully on the second.
