Despite being behind on first innings, Berkshire started batting after luncheon at 2.20 pm on the second day needing 88 runs to win. 34 runs had been scored for the loss of one wicket when heavy rain stopped play at 2.45 pm and the match was abandoned at 5.40 pm when it was judged that no further play would be possible. For Monmouthshire, there were 9 fours in Silverlock’s 77. In the Monmouthshire first innings, Stedman and Hudden added 72 runs for the seventh wicket. For Berkshire, Cave scored 67. In the Berkshire first innings, Brown and Cave put on 104 runs for the sixth wicket, which was the highest partnership for that wicket during the season. When the score was 171-5 wickets, Gould took over the wicket-keeping duties from Williams “who did not appear to be in his usual form.” [Missing: Umpires; extras breakdown; in Berkshire 1 st inns boundaries in Cave’s 67.] Sources: South Wales Argus 18,19 July; South Wales Weekly Argus 26 July; Star of Gwent 25 July; South Wales Daily News 19,21 July; South Wales Times 25 July; Western Mail 19,21 July; Berkshire Chronicle 26 July; Reading Mercury 26 July; The Sportsman 19,21 July.
