On the first day rain prevented a start being made until 1.55 pm, and there were several rain interruptions during the day. For the visitors, there were 12 fours in Turnbull’s 72, 5 fours in Prince’s 68 not out, and 6 fours in J F Whitwell’s 58. In the Durham innings, Prince and Turnbull put on 112 runs for the ninth wicket, which was the highest for that wicket during the season. Elam’s 54 for Yorkshire 2 nd XI contained 8 fours in an innings of 85 minutes. [An alternative version of this score found in the Yorkshire scorebook and yearbook gives in the Yorkshire first innings Turnbull bowling 23 overs; and in the Durham innings Oyston bowling no maidens.] [Missing: Complete.] Sources: Yorkshire Scorebook; Durham Scorebook; Yorkshire Year Book 1902, p 157; Yorkshire Post 13,14 August; Newcastle Daily Journal 13,14 August; Newcastle Daily Leader 13,14 August; The Sportsman 13,14 August.
