The Surrey 2 nd XI declaration set the home team a target of 338 runs in three and a half hours. Eight wickets were down with 20 minutes to go, but Horton and B C Smith held out until stumps were drawn. Previously, Northamptonshire had saved the follow on by the narrow margin of 3 runs, due largely to Colson and Horton adding 50 runs for the seventh wicket. For Surrey 2 nd XI, there were 8 fours in Baker’s 74 not out, 8 fours in Moulder’s 55 and 7 fours in Gooder’s 53. In the Surrey 2 nd XI second innings, Baker and Moulder put on 114 runs for the third wicket, which was the third highest for that wicket during the season. G J Thompson was reported as being “very unwell” during the game, but batted and bowled. [Missing: In Northamptonshire 1 st inns fall of eighth and ninth wickets.] Sources: Northampton Daily Chronicle 7,8,10 August; Northampton Herald 10 August; Northampton Mercury 9 August; Surrey Year Book 1901, p 129; Sporting Life 8,9 August; The Sportsman 8,9 August.
