He took 12 wickets in the match for 173 runs – the third highest total of the season of runs conceded by a bowler in a match - including 9 for 87 in the Oxfordshire first innings. He also top-scored with an innings of 143. It lasted for 2 hours and 50 minutes and included 1 five, 14 fours, 4 threes and 14 twos. His all-round performance was the best of the season on the basis used in the statistical survey. Morres scored 113 in 2 hours and 20 minutes with 1 five, 18 fours and 4 threes. Morres and Williams put on 178 for the third Berkshire wicket, which was the highest partnership for that wicket during the season. For Oxfordshire, J W Marsh’s 51 contained 7 fours and was scored at a run a minute. 208 runs behind on first innings, the visitors saved the match, according to press reports, due to the batting of Bassett and the two Rogers brothers. In the Oxfordshire first innings, Bradford retired hurt with the score at 178 for 7 wickets, and came in again at the fall of the ninth wicket. In the Oxfordshire second innings, P Rogers and A Rogers put on 57 runs for the seventh wicket. When he had scored 37 in the Oxfordshire second innings, Bassett reached the career milestone of one thousand runs in championship matches.
