Rain on the second day prevented play before 1.25 pm and caused a forty minute stoppage later in the afternoon. Durham had won the game between these two teams when they met at Jesmond in May. For the visitors, there were 11 fours in Thompson’s innings of 86, scored in two and a half hours. For the home side, there were 9 fours in Horsley’s 88, an innings of around two hours, and 9 fours in Whitwell’s 70. The attendance on the first day when the weather was fine was estimated at close to two thousand. In the Northumberland innings, Clayton and Hansell both reached the career milestone of two thousand runs in championship matches – Clayton when he had scored 28 and Hansell when 7.
