A thunderstorm halted play before lunch and play was called off at 4.00 pm when it was clear no further play could take place. On the second day, the pitch was drying well after overnight rain and it was hoped to start at 1.00 pm. However, a further heavy thunderstorm at noon flooded the pitch and the match was abandoned. Roles performed the ‘hat-trick’ for Devon, his victims being Rees, Harris and Hudden. There were 1 five and 2 fours in Silverlock’s 41. Some sources indicate Lloyd was the Monmouthshire captain for this match . [An alternative version of this score, found in the Devon scorebook, has Stedman not batting in the Monmouthshire innings, and the Monmouthshire averages published in Wisden are calculated on the basis that he did not bat in this match. However, with the seventh wicket falling at 93 Stedman must have batted to allow the score to be raised 96 before rain stopped play. All other sources listed have Stedman batting and scoring 0 not out and this latter version has been adopted.] [Missing: In Monmouthshire inns who bowled the no ball; initials of Roles.] Sources: Devon Scorebook; South Wales Daily News 26 July; South Wales Telegraph 26 July; Western Mail 27 July; Western Daily Mercury 29 July; The Sportsman 27,29 July.
