The match seemed a certain draw when Durham began their second innings needing 94 runs to win in 50 minutes. However, wickets fell rapidly to the bowling of Thompson and East, but the last wicket pair, Turnbull and Kirtley, coming together with the score 12 for nine wickets, batted out the last ten minutes adding 2 runs. If Durham had been dismissed for 14, it would have been the lowest score ever in the Championship, beating the 23 by Staffordshire against Worcestershire at Stourbridge in 1895. Play on the first day did not start until 3.30 pm because of rain. For the visitors, Thompson took 11 wickets in the match for 46 runs, and also top-scored for his team with 45 in the first innings. For Durham, W F Whitwell also took 11 wickets in the match for 58 runs, including 7-42 in the Northamptonshire first innings. Elliot’s 49, the highest score of the game, included 5 fours. G H Colson withdrew from the Northamptonshire team on the Friday morning with a severe chill, and L C Crockett was summoned to Darlington to take his place. He arrived too late to bat in the visitors’ first innings.
