The Glamorgan total of 538, scored in 270 minutes, was a new record for the Championship, exceeding the 517 for 8 wickets declared scored by Northamptonshire against Durham at South Shields in 1900, and was the highest of the season. It included 52 extras, which was also a Championship record, exceeding the 50 conceded on two previous occasions. The 254 scored by Morgan was also a new Championship record, the previous one being held by J F Marsh with 200 not out for Oxfordshire against Buckinghamshire at Aylesbury in 1899. The 254 runs were also the most scored by a batsman in a match and another Championship record, exceeding the 200 runs scored by J F Marsh in the 1899 match already referred to above. The Glamorgan opening partnership of 250 was yet another record beating the 224 put on for the first wicket by L G A Collins and M J Dauglish for Berkshire against Oxfordshire at Reading in 1898. Morgan’s innings contained 1 six, and 40 fours. He reached his first hundred in 110 minutes, his second hundred in 190 minutes, and his 254 in 220 minutes. There were 14 fours, 2 threes, and 10 twos in Osborne’s 110. S Lowe took 12 wickets in the match for 97 runs. For Monmouthshire, F Rees scored 60, which included 8 fours, and Phillips 51, which also included 8 fours. In the Monmouthshire second innings, these two batmen put on 108 runs for the fifth wicket. The 162 runs conceded by Silverlock was the third highest by a bowler in an innings during the season. The start on the first day was delayed until 12.00 pm because the visitors were held up by a railway accident in the Newport tunnel. Even so, the 574 runs scored on the first day were the most during the season. Some newspaper reports indicate Lloyd captained Monmouthshire not Stedman. [Missing: Part fall of wickets; extras breakdown; in Glamorgan inns threes and twos in Morgan’s 254.] Sources: South Wales Daily News 20,22 July; South Wales Echo 19,20 July; Western Mail 20,22 July; South Wales Argus 19,20 July; South Wales Telegraph 19,20 July; South Wales Times 26 July; South Wales Weekly Argus 27 July; The Sportsman 20,23 July.
