It was the smallest margin of victory for a team batting fourth during the season. For the winners, Wright took 10 wickets in the match for 106 runs, as well as scoring 46 not out in Buckinghamshire’s second innings. Medlicott’s 57 for Wiltshire was scored in two and three-quarter hours. Smart, who was expected to play an important role as a bowler in the visitors’ second innings, opened the Wiltshire bowling but split his thumb when he had bowled three overs. He played no further part in the match. Awdry kept wicket when Smart bowled in the first innings and after the latter’s injury in the second. In the Wiltshire second innings when he had scored 2, Medlicott reached the career milestone of one thousand runs in championship matches. [There is some uncertainty about Packer’s initial. The newspaper reports give none, Wisden averages give H Packer, whilst the 1901 Census gives details of an ‘A Packer’ residing at High Wycombe who could be the player. In the absence of any evidence to date linking ‘A Packer’ to a Buckinghamshire cricket club, the Wisden version has been adopted.] [Missing: Extras breakdown; fall of wickets; in Wiltshire 2 nd inns boundaries in Medlicott’s 57, and batting order; in Buckinghamshire 1 st inns which Taunton ct Kentish; in Buckinghamshire 2 nd inns batting order; initials of Martin.] Sources: Devizes and Wiltshire Gazette 18 July; North Wilts Guardian 20,27 July; Salisbury Journal 20 July; Wiltshire Telegraph 20 July; Wiltshire Times 20 July; Bucks Advertiser 20 July; Bucks Herald 20 July; South Bucks Free Press 19 July; The Sportsman 18,19 July.
