The visitors had been left a little over three hours to score the 237 runs required for victory. G J Thompson performed the ‘hat-trick’ for Northamptonshire in the Surrey 2 nd XI first innings, his victims being Barker, Gooder and H Thompson. For the visitors, there were 11 fours in Smith’s 73 not out, scored in 90 minutes, and 1 five and 8 fours in Horton’s 62. In the Northamptonshire first innings, Cox and Horton added 76 for the ninth wicket, which was the third highest for that wicket during the season. For the home team, Lees had scores of 53, with 1 six and 8 fours, and 68, with 1 eight, 2 fives and 5 fours. Raphael’s 61, an innings of two hours, contained 8 fours, and Gillett’s 52 included 6 fours. In the Surrey first innings, Raphael and Lees added 59 runs for the seventh wicket.
