The fixture had been arranged for three days, but it was not a first-class fixture. For the winners, Thompson took ten wickets in the match for 141 runs, including 9 for 59 in the MCC first innings. There were 8 fours in Silverlock’s 80, scored in 2 hours and ten minutes. Horton scored 66, Medlicott 58, and Hill 55 with 7 fours. In the Minor Counties first innings, Silverlock and Hill added 102 runs for the third wicket and Medlicott and Horton 90 for the seventh wicket. For the MCC, Murrell top scored with 41. There was some strong criticism in press reports of the MCC for fielding a “weak team”. The attendances on both days were small. There were seven debutants in the Minor Counties team, including two from Monmouthshire, the first time that county had been represented. [An alternative version of the score for the Minor Counties first innings has .the second wicket falling at 33 and the third at 62. All sources listed give umpire Roche’s initial as R, but it may be W Roche who was on the MCC groundstaff.] [Missing: Part fall of wickets; in MCC 2 nd inns part batting order; in Minor Counties 1 st inns innings boundaries in Horton’s 66 and Medlicott’s 58.] Sources: MCC Scores 1901; Wisden 1902, p 294; The Sportsman 18,19 June; Sporting Life 18,19 June; The Times 18,19 June.
