11 Scorebook Differences It had been hoped that the existence of five scorebooks would make the task of compiling this book considerably easier, but in practice this has not always been the case. A significant number of differences have arisen, some of which it has been possible to resolve, but others where there remain some doubts as to which is the correct version. In addition, there have also been some significant differences between scorebooks and scores in newspapers, which have needed to be resolved. The approach followed in dealing with these discrepancies has been as follows: 1 It is important that the project should achieve its objective of having a single agreed score for each match, which has universal support. 2 Scorebooks should be the first port of call where they exist. 3 Where differences exist between scorebooks, judgements have to be made on the relative quality of scoring in the scorebooks, as some scorers are likely to be more competent and accurate than others. 4 Judgements should also take into account in assessing differences, both in scorebooks and in newspaper sources, the version supported by the published averages, or that which is closest to them. It is assumed that in the majority of cases the published averages in Wisden have been compiled by the relevant county officials from their scorebooks. [In the last analysis, this should guide judgements even if it results in a ‘hybrid score’.] 5 Differences between scorebooks should be listed in the notes to all the relevant scores, together with an explanation of which version has been adopted. There were significant differences between scorebooks, or between scorebooks and newspaper sources for the following 13 matches: Match 9 : Northumberland v Yorkshire 2nd XI at Jesmond Match 17 : Hertfordshire v Cambridgeshire at Hertford Match 20 : Durham v Yorkshire 2nd XI at West Hartlepool Match 25 : Yorkshire 2nd XI v Northumberland at Hull Match 28 : Northamptonshire v Yorkshire 2nd XI at Northampton Match 30 : Glamorgan v Devon at Swansea Match 33 : Durham v Staffordshire at South Shields Match 36 : Northumberland v Staffordshire at Jesmond Match 38 : Wiltshire v Devon at Trowbridge Match 53 : Yorkshire 2nd XI v Durham at Dewsbury Match 56 : Devon v Surrey 2nd XI at Exeter Match 58 : Staffordshire v Durham at Stoke-on-Trent Match 64 : Surrey 2nd XI v Devon at The Oval For the seven matches emboldened, the relevant scorebooks and other sources need to be checked further and, in the light of the experiences gained in dealing with differences between scorebooks in future years, it is possible that one or two amendments may be made to these scores. If so, these revisions will be notified in future issues of the seasonal books. In the match scores the symbol * indicates captain and + wicket-keeper.
