The encounter between the two teams at Newport the previous week had been won by Monmouthshire. Rain stopped play after only three hours on the second day, and the game was abandoned at 3.30 pm. No batsman played an innings of over 34 runs. For Berkshire, Relf took 7 wickets for 57 runs in the Monmouthshire innings. Shortly after the fall of the second wicket in the Berkshire first innings, Steeples strained himself bowling and had to retire. He was strapped up and returned to bowl after lunch.
