Staffordshire had needed to win this match to avoid occupying the bottom slot in the Championship. The match between the two teams at Walsall in June had also been won by Yorkshire. Rain interruptions limited play on the first day to around four hours. The Staffordshire second innings total of 30 was the lowest of the season.
