When the teams met at The Oval in June, Northamptonshire won. For the visitors, there were 7 fours in Barkerís 86 and 1 five and 4 fours in Bakerís 63. In the Surrey first innings Barker and Nice added over 50 runs for the ninth wicket. In the home teamís innings, Pool batted low in the order due to an injured hand. Since it became voluntary at the beginning of the season, this was the second instance in the Championship where the follow-on was not enforced.
