Notes: When the fixtures for the season were planned, it had been hoped that the competition would move to a basis where all teams played the required number of matches without resorting to having to count matches against opponents that did not qualify for the table. Against this background, it had not been intended that Yorkshire 2 nd XI should become involved in the Championship until 1901 at the earliest. However, before the start of the season it was realised that Staffordshire did not have the 8 matches sufficient to qualify for the competition, and had they withdrawn several other teams would have had less than the minimum number of matches and the Championship would become meaningless. It was agreed, therefore, that the two matches against Yorkshire 2 nd XI should count as championship fixtures for Staffordshire. For reasons that are less clear, it was subsequently decided that the two games with Surrey 2 nd XI should similarly be treated, even though the latter already had sufficient matches to qualify for the table, yet the two matches with Norfolk who were also qualified for the competition remained friendlies. Of the eleven players making their final appearance in a championship match for the county in 1900, W Tolson was to play for Durham between 1906 and 1913.
