The country was engulfed in a wave of shock and grief, and in a desire to help the bereaved, it was suggested that a match – The Australians v The Professionals of England – be played in London for the benefit of the relief fund. This was not entirely altruistic, as the two teams would take a share in the proceeds. This match did not take place, although the Australians did donate £100 to the fund. Eventually, on 19, 20 and 21 September, a game was arranged between those well-worn names, North v South, at The Oval, which realised £258 1s 6d for those in distress.
