Lives in Cricket No 7 - Richard Daft

Chapter Eleven Gentlemen and Players Before the season of 1874, Richard suffered a commercial disaster. Since 1868, he had become well-established as a sports outfitter in Lister Gate, Nottingham, with H.A.Finn as his manager. When his employer censured him for negligence and inattention to business, Finn immediately gave a fortnight’s notice. Most employees would have made him leave at once and looked for a replacement, but this did not occur to Richard. A day or two later, Finn left a note for him with the errand boy saying that he had been unexpectedly called to Liverpool for a discussion about a new job. In fact, he had absconded with the takings. The police also suspected forgery and took out a warrant for Finn’s arrest. Armed with the warrant, a detective travelled to Liverpool where Finn had family, drawing 63 Continuity. Daft’s sports warehouse on the corner of Lister Gate, Nottingham occupied premises built in 1854: the building remains in shop use and even sells sports outfits, of a sort.
