In my early years he was like every boy’s favourite granddad, imparting a bit of technical advice but making cricket practice fun. I batted against him in my formative years and before I went on overseas tours. That experience of him bowling his leg spinners to me over many, many years gave me enormous confidence and knowledge to play any wrist spinner. A warm generous human being.
