Lives in Cricket No 52 - Schooled in Cricket (2nd edition)

43 It may hardly seem fair – performances such as this – but the presence of a professional in the opposition ranks would certainly have justified his appearance! Johnny himself would have not needed to remember that cricket is a game – and that games are best played both in a sporting manner but at the same time in the pursuit of the best possible level of performance. Johnny had also coached at Rishworth School in 1939. It seems from the respective school magazines that he almost certainly only coached at each of them in the summer term of 1939 and his return to these schools may have been thwarted by the ensuing war. As the 1939 season was drawing to an end, Johnny travelled again to Somerset to start a career in cricket outside his native county and away from the north of Marriage and a move to Liverpool Northern and back Johnny Lawrence in the 1930s.
