Whether there wasn’t the money in the pot for his re-engagement; or Kirkburton found someone else; or more likely he got a better offer, a move to Windhill in the Bradford League arguably must have represented a further step up the ladder (even compared with the high standards of the Huddersfield League) in 1936 and Windhill became a club he was happy playing at, as he returned there for a season after a year at Liverpool Northern in 1938. Johnny was certainly adept at bowling on such smallish grounds as Kirkburton and Windhill despite the slowness of his bowling which would have daunted other slow bowlers who would have been afraid of the short boundary distances. It is no accident that Johnny would often hit the ground running when joining a new club or starting a new season. He was someone who practised so much so he would already have his bowling rhythm before a new season even started. So – playing his first game for Windhill at Bankfoot on May 2, 1936 – he had the remarkable debut figures of six for 43 and began his productive bowling partnership with quick bowler Squire Render who took the other four wickets as Bankfoot crumbled to 78 all out. Johnny was not required to bat as Windhill won by nine wickets.
