24 Early days We know from Johnny’s notes that he had been taken to cricket matches in his pram and that from the age of three he expressed the notion – which he believed had been given to him by his father – that he wanted to be a county cricketer. As he as a coach later encouraged pupils to hold the bat straight from the age of seven or eight we can imagine that he was already developing that way in his own childhood. On summer holiday visits to his relatives in the East Riding he “watched village cricket during the holidays at Middleton on the Wolds and Bishop Burton”.
