215 Appendix Two Some of Johnny Lawrence’s league career in more detail Kirkburton 1934 After the cup tie with Armitage Bridge, other outstanding performances that season included seven wickets against Huddersfield enabling Kirkburton to win with a ten-man team; 50 and six for 56 and two catches in a win over Meltham; six for 48 in a win at Elland; plus another six wicket haul in the return match with Bradley Mills securing an unlikely win in a low scoring match. Windhill 1936 Johnny followed the opening win over Bankfoot with 16 runs, two wickets and a catch at home to Idle as Windhill won by 76 runs. Then he took three wickets and scored 12 not out in a five wicket win at Bingley on May 16. Johnny was wicketless at Bradford on May 23 and Bradford though nine down clung on for a draw. This began a more uncertain period for Windhill which lasted throughout June. On Whit Bank Holiday Monday, June 1, a first defeat came at Lightcliffe. Johnny took two wickets the next day to help defeat Pudsey St Lawrence by two wickets. On June 6, Windhill lost at Spen Victoria despite Johnny’s four wickets. On June 20 Windhill only drew but in a thrilling match on June 27 at home to Undercliffe, Johnny took four of the seven wickets that did fall and scored 57 not out in quick time to help Windhill win by five wickets and this marked a restoration of Windhill’s fortunes. On July 4 at home to Bankfoot after Windhill had scored 214 for seven, Johnny took seven for 72 as Windhill bowled out Bankfoot for 150. He followed this with six for 58 at Idle for yet another win after Windhill had batted first. At home to Bingley on July 18, he took three wickets and scored 22 as Windhill won by four wickets. A home defeat came on July 25 at the hands of championship rival contenders Bradford with Windhill bowled out for 99. Johnny scored 16 and took two of the five Bradford wickets that did fall. At Farsley on August 1, Johnny must have toiled long and hard as he took the other two wickets to fall to Render’s five for 83 whilst
