Lives in Cricket No 51 - Rev ES Carter
and when in Yorkshire would stay with his brother or others in his family, and play very occasionally for the Gentlemen of Yorkshire. Frances Carter, the mother of the above 11 children, died in 1870. William worked on at Slingsby and married again to a lady named Eliza. His gross income at Slingby was recorded in the 1880 Crockford’s Clerical Directory as being £516 with the use of the Rectory. When probate was granted to Eliza Carter on 9 October 1882, William’s estate was valued at £2694.0.3d. Using the retail prices index as a guide, that £2694 would be in 2018 the equivalent of about £325,000. By his will William made lifetime provision for his ill son John, with Edmund as a trustee, and then left the rest of his estate to Eliza. Whether Edmund Carter later received monies from his step-mother or not, he never seemed to be lacking in cash. Over a long lifetime his name frequently appeared in published subscription lists for a variety of causes, usually named as giving £1.1.0d – a guinea – equivalent now to about £120. Edmund’s schooling and early Gentlemen of Yorkshire cricket It was 1855 when Edmund’s father and mother and their youngest children moved to the Rectory at Slingsby and Edmund thus left the town of Malton where he had spent his very early years. In 1859 he was awarded a King’s Scholarship from Durham School, and he entered the school in February 1859 as a member of School House. The 1861 census shows him as resident at Bellassis, Brancepeth Road, Crossgate, Durham with the Headmaster the Reverend Henry Holden, his wife, their children, 18 other pupils, and eight female staff. Bellasis was the original name of the house first occupied by Durham School. The more obvious school to have attended would have been St Peter’s at York, but maybe the offer of a scholarship was a deciding factor for Edmund’s parents. Durham School now have no available admission records that give fuller detail for Edmund. At Durham School, whilst nothing is now recorded as to his educational skills, Edmund was a member of the first eleven at Family 11
