LIVES IN CRICKET 51 Reverend ES Carter A Yorkshire Cricketing Cleric by Anthony Bradbury £15 ACS Publications Edmund Carter is pictured in the circular photograph, on the left, of this 1907 Yorkshire newspaper, as an ‘old friend’ of the Yorkshire captain Lord Hawke. Carter ‘introduced him to Yorkshire cricket’. Although ES Carter played only a handful of first-class matches for Yorkshire, he played the game for Oxford University, in Victoria as a young man, and in London, before the bulk of his life’s work as a clergyman in the shadow of York Minster.
