church close to Lord’s, and then on 14 August at St Mary’s Church, Bolsterstone, the village of his birth. The plain headstone to Rockley’s grave bears the simple inscription “Evelyn Rockley Wilson, 25 March 1879 - 21 July 1957.” There is nothing to tell the visitor that the headstone marks the final resting place of a devoted Wykehamist and a gifted cricketer. A commemorative plaque, unveiled by Rockley’s friend Sir Hubert Ashton on the opening of the pavilion on 28 May 1966, reads: This tent has been built in memory of Rockley Wilson (1879 to 1957) who devoted 54 years of his life to Winchester and is remembered by cricketers with affection and gratitude. It is a worthy tribute to a remarkable cricketer and a singular man. Later Years 106
