Lives in Cricket No 49 - Enid Bakewell

97 Chapter Eighteen 1990s Thomas Turton died on May Day 1990. As a lifelong socialist he might have felt that a good time to go. He left no requests about arrangements so Enid had to get on and arrange things the way she thought he would have liked. There was a lot of work needed doing on his house, and though Enid started to take down the garage there was too much for her. Robert took over and eventually moved in there. It was after her father died that Enid finally moved out from Colin: she always said that he was not much support and he refused to give up smoking or even to take his habit out of doors, so they would end up with Colin smoking in front of the TV and Enid in another room listening to music. She said to him: ‘What you do with your lungs is your business, but not what you do to other people’s.’ Robert had bronchitis which went into asthma, but Colin still smoked. Furthermore, they had always disagreed politically – Colin would put up Tory posters, Enid Labour ones. Problems mounted. Enid was put on anti-depressants after her dad died, and to cap it all had problems with the swimming coaching where she offered someone a share of her hours and she ended up taking them all. Enid had rented a flat in Hucknall but could no longer afford £57 a week. Enid says: ‘ Dad’s death was really traumatic for me - I just wanted him back in his Enid and Dad.
