Lives in Cricket No 49 - Enid Bakewell
90 Enid in South Africa again not play or coach in South Africa while they still wish to be considered for the England team. Pam Groves then issued her own statement. From a remark by Enid, she also captained the side. Pam Groves had played for some years at regional level and below, and she came from Wolverhampton. Enid says of her Pam Groves is now dead but was a very astute captain. I remember her in South Africa where she would bowl with a Kookaburra ball that swung more. Pam was very thoughtful, One year at cricket week it rained for so long that a bat left in the tent had swollen up. In two sittings Pam cooked us all spaghetti bolognaise and another pasta dish and brought them from her house in Malvern to our campsite in Colwall village, enough to feed the whole campsite! By April Rachael Heyhoe had severed her connection with the WCA over what she described as their hypocrisy on the matter, suggesting that people had winked at the Unicorns tours until they became more widely known about and sponsorship might be threatened. In fact she did not play again for the WCA as such, though she did play against the Indians and against the Australians the following year for regional sides. She was of course 47 and working on a media career. Oddly, she had not been at the AGM. Womens Cricket News volume one number six includes a report on the jubilee match, England Past versus England Present with a picture of Enid with her dad and daughter (probably Lynne), as she had actually organised the game, Certainly Enid was not in the squad that played a quadrangular tournament in Ireland (with Holland and Denmark) but then she was 45 by now. Later in the year Carole Hodges was announced as the England captain for the series against India. Janet Southgate had been captain in Australia in 1984-85.
