Lives in Cricket No 49 - Enid Bakewell
86 Chapter Fourteen 1985 Enid was back from South Africa. There had been no official international tours since the World Cup, so she had to remind the selectors all over again. In 1984 the first score we have is for a pick-up and trial match. JM Court’s XI made 145 for five (Enid 17 in 57 minutes), and CJ Watmough’s XI 89 for four in 45 overs (Enid 8-0-13-2). New Zealand were touring in 1984 and Enid played for East Midlands against them but was not this season picked for England. In the East Midlands game New Zealand made 222 for eight declared (Enid 19.2-3-53- 2). At the end East Midlands were 100 for two, with Enid just out for 57. She did also play against them for a WCA President’s XI in July. New Zealand made 183 for six declared (Enid, economical enough, 13-3-28-0), and the WCA XI 125 for seven (Enid 19). Nottingham reached the final of the National Club Knockout in 1984, playing Vagabonds in the semi-final. Vagabonds made 87 (Enid 9-3-18-4) and Nottingham 87 for nine (Enid 30) and Nottingham scraped through by losing fewer wickets. So they played Kent Invicta in the final, but lost. Kent Invicta made only 107 for nine (Enid 10-1-23-3 and two catches). Enid’s 23 was the top score as Nottingham finished on 99 for eight. At club level Enid was still a class above the rest of her team. The year 1985 again began with a series of trial matches at Warwick which appear to have included everyone available, since the numbers for the teams never quite went up to eleven. The first one (actually nine a side) featured CJ Barr’s XI, bowled out for 97 (Enid 7.2-2-16-3) against CA Hodges’ XI, who knocked off the runs for one wicket, that of Enid, out for three. Then CA Hodges XI (actually ten) made 121 for five declared (Enid 19 run out) before Jane Powell’s XI 61 for five (Enid 2-1-1-0), and (nine a side again) CA Hodges’ XI made 95 (Enid 14) before MA Lear’s XI five for nought and it rained. In July East Midlands played Middlesex II – East Midlands 266 for four declared (Enid 28) Middlesex II 71 (Enid 2.3-0-7-2). Then on July 28 they met Middlesex in the semi-final of the Area knockout. The match could not start until 3pm and was reduced to 25 overs a side. East Midlands scored 77 for four in 25 overs (Enid out for three); Middlesex did better and made 81 for six in 24 (Enid 5-3-8-1). Again Nottingham Women reached the final of the Club Knockout, playing Timperley in the semi-final. Nottingham made 134 for seven in 40 overs thanks almost entirely to Enid, who opened the batting and stayed to the end at 83 not out, then held Timperley to 88 for eight with Enid taking
