85 Enid in South Africa Against the ‘Newlands Wednesday XI’ the Unicorns scored 186 for four declared. Enid, who made 70, and Margaret Taylor, 75, put on 157 for the first wicket. The Newlands team replied with 138 for nine. Enid bowled only two overs but took two for 12. For this game she was captaining the side. Then came the Scottburgh Invitation XI, who made 128, Enid taking three for 22 in seven overs. But the Unicorns managed only 123 for eight. Enid was out for one and there were three run outs. On New Year’s Day they played Southern Transvaal, who scored 145, Enid taking two for 38 in 17.1 overs. In 36 overs the Unicorns managed 44 for seven with Enid making nine. With their cricket so far undistinguished (and every game drawn) the Unicorns finished with a two day match against South Africa Women. South Africa made 183 for nine declared in 83 overs (Enid 19-5-35-1) and at the end of the first day the Unicorns were 71 for none. They went on to 203 for two declared with Enid at last finding her form with 114 not out, but time was running out. The South African second innings was declared at 139 for three (Enid 6-0-28-2), and the Unicorns ended on 83 for two (Enid 38 not out). Enid had been to South Africa, but on this occasion nobody noticed so there was no talk of sanctions. She said of South Africa : It was not as bad as the press made out and we were given a tour of Soweto by a woman sergeant in the police – Soweto was like a huge council estate where some looked after their homes and others had corrugated iron fences and were run down. She added: We did not go round the worst parts.
