Lives in Cricket No 49 - Enid Bakewell
72 WCA Cricket Week. Again, though, it rained. She took three for 20 against C Evans XI, but it rained before her team could bat. Enid made 83 against C Watmough’s XI and took three for 18 against G Davies’ XI. The only win was against P Clifford’s XI when Enid took four for eight then made 55 not out. She turned out for Rachael Heyhoe Flint’s XI against the touring India Club, a game in which she scored 73. In 1979 TL Turton is still shown as East Midlands President! By 1980 he was no longer in that position, but in 1981 appears there again, with Enid as PR Officer and junior organiser. Enid does not recall this at all, so sometimes contemporary records set more questions than they answer. The next World Cup should have been in Australia and New Zealand in 1980-81 but surprisingly Australia could not oblige, and New Zealand could not handle it on their own at that time, but agreed to host it a year later, starting in January 1982. Yorkshire beat East Midlands by one wicket on June 1, 1980, but no individual details are available. Also in June Enid played for the Rest against An England XI and took one for 14 as they were bowled for 86. The Rest won by seven wickets and Enid made 29. In the National Club Knockout Nottingham scored 244 to beat Manchester, dismissed them for 82 and made it into the quarter-final. Again, no individual scores. In July 1980 there was a three-day game between England and the Rest. The England XI made 208 for five declared (Enid none for 35) but the match was ruined by rain, the Rest struggling to 105 for six of which Enid made 31. Enid again led a team for Cricket Week and yet again most of it was spoiled by rain. At the semi-final stage of the National Club Knockout Nottingham lost by one run to Gunnersbury (91 to 90). That’s what was implied by the Bulletin , but in this case we have the scores. Nottingham were out for 91, despite Enid carrying her bat for 56 not out, and Gunnersbury lost only one wicket in making the runs, Enid bowling eight overs for 20. In the September Bulletin was actually something from Nottingham; the club would be 50 years old in 1981. At the East Midlands AGM in September TL Turton was re-elected president, and Enid became area secretary. In February 1981 the Bulletin reported that Rachael Heyhoe Flint, no longer a pariah, had been elected as a Vice-President of the WCA. The same issued announced confirmation that the next World Cup would be in New Zealand in early 1982. In 1981 Enid was in action in May, playing for North against East in a 55 over game. She bowled 11 overs and took two for 11 as the East struggled to 114 for eight. The North lost two wickets in getting the runs, Enid run out for 18 (the other wicket was also a run out). They should have had another game the next day but it rained. In July she played for England Women against the Rest (a trial for those After ‘76
