Lives in Cricket No 49 - Enid Bakewell
54 Enid from 1969 in Wisden. The June edition refers to the forthcoming Chesterfield match, though it gives the date as June 28, forming part of the county club’s centenary celebrations. In this issue Enid was shown as part of the North Midlands team, though there was no news from North Midlands in July or August or indeed the winter issue. We are then told that Enid was selected as captain for the North Midlands versus East Anglia on May 29. On June 13 North Midlands played Middlesex in a friendly, with North Midlands scoring 134 of which Enid made 75. Middlesex finished on 124 for nine and the match was drawn. Enid bowled only six overs for ten runs, but she was captaining the side and wanted to look at the other available bowling options. June 21 was a one-day trial match in which England Women scored 161 for six declared, Enid only bowling two overs for ten runs, and England Select Women scored 121, with Enid out for nought. The Midland League was still going and Nottingham were still members. In July Nottingham were reported as sharing the lead with Wolverhampton, and it was later reported that Wolverhampton had won it With the 1973 World Cup in the offing, there was some attention in 1972 to getting a team together. On July 29, in a 60 over match, England Women scored 243 for four. Enid made only 21, but opening partner Lynne Thomas made 110. Young England Women were all out for 97, with Enid’s figures 12-1-30-5. The next day, England women played the touring men’s team from Canada, Toronto CC. Toronto made 182 for four declared (Enid, unusually expensive, four overs for 37) England Women 160 for nine (Enid 29). Enid at the crease tries something over-ambitious.
