Lives in Cricket No 49 - Enid Bakewell

35 After Dartford with the car until the children came along but it was only a two-seater and often broke down.” Enid says she was ‘married in August 1964 and Lorna was born two years later. I’d just got a head of department job at secondary school and then I realised – well, everybody else realised, I was still playing at five months and fielding to my own bowling then still taking sweetex – but I wouldn’t be without her now. The music teacher said: ‘We’ve just got the place livened up, why’re you leaving now?’’ On January 23, 1965 she played for Midlands B against West B at hockey (playing left back) as reported by Hockey Field. Enid was named in a Midland Counties cricket squad in May, then there were a couple of Midlands games mentioned by WCA News as Enid took four for 34 against the West and three for 48 against the South, though both games were lost. And we know of one game for Nottingham, where she made 41 as they scored 112 for seven to beat Edgbaston. The Rest against the WCA in July was played at the Oval and should have been a showpiece two-day match. The Rest made 135 for four declared with Enid taking one for 30 in nine overs, and the WCA were 70 for two at the close, Enid out for 22. Then the second day was rained off. Then she played a couple of games in August for EA Sanders XI against JP Braggers XI, described as trial matches by WC though they were played at Cricket Week venues. In the first game Braggers XI made 155 for nine declared in 75 overs (but those overs bowled in three hours), with the 41-year-old Mary Robinson who had opened still there on 61 not out and Enid taking three for 47 in 20 overs. In reply Sanders XI made 157 for six rather more quickly after Enid had taken 79 minutes to score 24. The second game was more Enid’s. Sanders XI struggled to 113 for nine declared in 54 overs but that was made to look substantial as in 42 overs, Braggers XI made 34 for eight (something of a recovery from 18 for seven) and Enid bowled unchanged at one end; 21-12-15-5. Large as life – a Frisky.
