103 Invicta, scoring 46 and taking 4-1’ . Enid played in Cricket Week this year, for Chris Symes’ team. Against ‘Judy Wilmot’ she made 127 not out and took two for 44 off ten overs. In other games she took three for seven in six overs and three for 35 in 14 overs.. Come 1995, and on May 4 Enid was a guest at the MCC 218 th anniversary dinner in the Long Room. Enid’s card is signed ‘To Enid, your fan’ by Tim Rice. Also preserved is the seating plan, with Enid next to Ruth Prideaux and opposite Miss SD Hill in a little female ghetto. Sheila Hill had played for many years for Kent. She was also well known as an umpire and chaired the women’s committee at Lord’s. She was a teacher at St Paul’s Girls School near the Oval. Enid says I think she taught maths and she engineered her own central heating system. In June she played for Surrey against Middlesex in a friendly, and bowled well, taking four for 13 in 11 overs and bowling Middlesex out for 66. Surrey made 69 for four without needing to call on Enid to bat. In the Area championships Surrey won their first two games, but then lost the next two. Enid was used as a bowler but was batting low in the order, only getting in twice. She bowled 11 overs for 12 runs against West Midlands, who were despatched for 108 for Surrey to win by nine wickets, and took one for 30 from 11 overs against Kent (Kent 179, Surrey 180 for three). After that Surrey were all out 161 (Enid four) against East Midlands, who made 162 for two (Enid 10.5.-1-31-0). Yorkshire scored 204 for eight (Enid 11-3-24-1) and Surrey ended 188 for eight with Enid 24 not out. They did beat East Anglia, making 245 for five without Enid batting and bowled East Anglia out for 167 (Enid 11-5-17-2). In the club knockout semi-final Redoubtables played Kent Invicta (having played Cambridge in the quarter final), but only made 96 for eight, with Enid run out for six. Enid bowled ten overs for 29, but Invicta won by seven wickets. A note in the July Wicket Women says: Redoubtables ‘spring chicken’ Enid Bakewell took eight for one off ten overs, but does not say when or against whom. Redoubtables at that stage were unbeaten in the Premier League South and indeed finished played five, won five. They should have met Wakefield in the Premier League final but it was rained off and the trophy shared. At Uttoxeter at the end of May 1996, Enid played for K Lowe’s XI against R Lupton’s XI. She got to bowl, taking two for 18 in ten overs as Lupton’s XI made 176 for eight, then it rained. Enid, still keen to play, was happy to turn out this year for Surrey Second Eleven, who played Yorkshire Seconds, losing a tight game by one wicket. Surrey made 170 for eight with Enid, opening again, run out for three) and Yorks made 171 for nine (Enid 11-4-19-2). Wicket Women mentions that at this stage the once invincible East Midlands had problems, unable to find 1990s
