Lives in Cricket No 49 - Enid Bakewell

102 matches in 1994, a second eleven game between Middlesex and Surrey and a game between Junior England (who she was coaching) and Redoubtables. For Redoubtables against Riverside again she scored 25 and bowled 10- 4-23-2. Then came the Area championship at Cambridge at the end of July, and this time she was playing for Surrey. Enid had to qualify for Surrey by residence, but it can’t have been as long a qualification as she seemed to think as she had surely been living in the south for less than a year. Initially Surrey did well, beating Lancashire & Cheshire by nine wickets, Enid taking two for 18 in 11 overs as they struggled to 125 for five before Surrey made 126 for one. Enid was not called on here and it seems she was no longer seen as a top order batsman. Thames Valley were beaten on scoring rate after they were held to 140 for nine with Enid again doing well, three for 14 from 11 overs. After 30.2 overs Surrey were 123 for one when it rained. In the next match Surrey scored a hefty 225 for eight against the West, Enid less successful this time with none for 41 from her 11 overs, though West were bowled out for 149. Then came a game against her former teammates at East Midlands, still a very strong team. Enid bowled 11 overs for 39 runs as East Midlands made 223 for eight, and, batting at four, was out for one, Surrey all out 203. Surrey had made it to the third place play-off, but East Midlands were in the final, where they lost heavily to Yorkshire. In the third place game Surrey made 206 for seven (Enid run out five) and East Anglia in reply made 126 for nine (Enid a tight 11-4-11-1). Then in the National Club Knockout Enid played for Redoubtables, but they did not do well, losing heavily to Riverside. Riverside made 175 for five (Enid 10-0-56-1), Redoubtables 60 (Enid four). She did play in the Territorial Tournament this year, and was perhaps discommoded by playing for the South as they lost all three games. Against Enid’s former team, MidWest, the South scored 175 with Enid run out for 13 with her former teammates perhaps recognising a weak spot. In 11 overs she then took one for 39 as MidWest got home by one wicket They then suffered two fairly heavy defeats. The East scored 166 for nine (Enid 6-0-19-0) and the South were out for 111 (Enid six), and then the North made 201 for six (Enid 11-4-23-0) and the South 124 (Enid four). These were to be Enid’s last appearances at territorial level – she was 53. But her club side Redoubtables were doing well. A WCA update sheet in August 1994 tells us that Redoubtables and Shepperton are ‘neck and neck’ in the Premier South … Enid Bakewell, Jan Brittin and Mary Nicholls have been the stars for Redoubtables. In the autumn edition, Enid Bakewell did well with bat and ball against 1990s
