Lives in Cricket No 49 - Enid Bakewell

99 1990s innings with 57 not out, seeing East Midlands to 137 for four with plenty of overs to spare. Kent toiled to 103 in 47 overs (Enid 10-7-5-4). Enid and Wendy Watson scored 47 for the first wicket before Enid was out for 23, Watson staying to 50 not out as East Midlands made 104 for four. Against Thames Valley East Midlands made a shaky start, losing three for 45. But Enid (89) and Jo Chamberlain (105) put on 170 and they reached 282 for six. Thames Valley had an opening partnership of 58 but then lost five wickets for 11 and ended at 129 for eight (Enid 11-5-16-2). Surrey made a respectable 200 for eight (Enid 11-2-31-2) but East Midlands were in control, reaching 203 for three with four overs to spare (Enid 33). This put them into the final; they met Yorkshire again and this time won with time to spare: Yorkshire 147 (Enid 11-1-36-1) and East Midlands 148 for three (though Enid was run out for nought, perhaps worrying that after 17 minutes she hadn’t scored). In August in a three day match Enid played for Midwest against East, apparently part of the Territorial Tournament with North playing South the same day. East Midlands was part of MidWest, so they picked up the star players, and bowled the East out for 142 (Enid 21-8-27-2) and 135 (Enid 16.5-10-21-2), MidWest scoring 252 for six declared (Enid eight) and 27 for 0 (Enid 13 not out). One would have expected more games here, but any record has been lost. In September East Midlands played a WCA President’s XI (a sort of champions against the Rest game) and won. East Midlands made 228 for four declared. Enid was run out for 25, but Wendy Watson made 97. The President’s XI were never quite in the game and finished on 214 for seven (Enid 11-2-31-1). The year 1992 began with the usual opener against Surrey. East Midlands made 244 for three, with Enid out for 13. Surrey were bowled out for 113, with Enid bowling tightly (10-4-16-2). In the Area championship East Midlands played their neighbours from West Midlands and won handsomely. West Midlands made 97 (Enid 11-4- 21-3) and East Midlands 98 for two, though Enid was out for 13 (stumped for 13 twice in a row, enough to make one superstitious). Thames Valley were equally easily disposed of, out for 113 (Enid 11-3-28-2) for East Midlands to win by ten wickets with Enid not out 40 and Wendy Watson not out 62. After beating them in the final for two years running, East Midlands were beaten this time by Yorkshire, though. Yorkshire made 214 for eight (Enid 11-0-59-2, most unusually taking some stick and indeed the most expensive bowler) and East Midlands 178 for eight (Enid 21 run out – the first three batters all run out). In the territorial tournament Enid again played for MidWest, who won a couple of games:
