Against the best 87 In a first for MCC tourists to Australia, the Bodyline team played a soccer match; at the Motordrome in Melbourne on Wednesday afternoon, March 15, 1933. They lost 3-1 to Hakoah then caught a train for Sydney on their way to New Zealand. Douglas Jardine needed police protection when he left by car - but only from enthusiasts wanting to pat him on the back. Jardine was also welcomed when he walked onto the ground; the crowd of 3000 rose and cheered for several minutes. The crowd was, however, so one newspaper reporter noted, ‘largely English’ The team: Duckworth in goal. Ames and Leyland full backs. Half backs, Bowes and Hammond (captain, seated centre with ball between his knees) and Verity. Forwards Mitchell, Tate, Brown, Voce, Paynter.
