Lives in Cricket No 48 - Maurice Leyland
Australian winter tour was already confirmed. He was to finish Yorkshire’s CountyChampionship campaignwith a disappointing run and though it was something of an anti-climax he still finished the season in second place in the Yorkshire averages, behind Herbert Sutcliffe, with 1,451 runs at an average of 69.09. His final wicket haul was 27 at 33.55. Overall these were figures he had every reason to feel pleased with and, crucially, his character endorsed Kipling’s contention that a true man was one who could treat triumph and disaster with equanimity. After a short break, following that disappointing end to the season, everything went into his preparation for an Australian adventure destined, after one or two more setbacks, to end in triumph. 1928, an unforgettable year 70 England, 1930: Men that Maurice knew and played alongside. Back: Duckworth, Robins, Woolley, Tate, Dick Tyldesley, Hendren. Front: Larwood, Hammond, Chapman (captain), Hobbs, Sutcliffe
