First steps to stardom 63 magazine. Though not quite as well known as The Boys Own Paper , Young England was well established. As a publication aimed at the development of young men as fit, outgoing and well rounded, the editorial team was on the look-out for role models to inspire the Empire’s youth and Maurice fitted that particular bill. His contribution was about left handed batting - and batsmen. Reading through it, the character of Maurice clearly shines through but, with a distinct swing toward the use of middle-class middle English it seems highly probable that it was a ghost- written piece, albeit based on Maurice’s thoughts. Maurice Leyland, Tom Shepherd of Surrey and H ‘Sailor’ Young of Essex gave their names to the Young England Annual 1925
