133 Signing off Leveson-Gower had handed it to Maurice in an envelope and urged him not to open it until the formalities were over. Away from the crowd, he had nervously, but carefully, torn open the sealed envelope; perhaps, for once, allowing himself a self- congratulatory thought and the anticipation of a handsome reward. “It was for ten bob,” divulged Brookes. “Look at that”, Maurice said again, his voice trailing off, “Ten bob ....” He smiled, and walked away.
