11 The Early Life of George Barkley Raikes; Family and Schooling who was educated at Keble College, Oxford; most of his highly successful legal doings and equally successful cricketing career took place in India (note 4) . Ernest married Hilda Barkley and their second child, Thomas Barkley Raikes (1902-1984), born in Bombay and educated at Trinity College, Oxford, was a cricketer of similar calibre to his father (note 5) – he too spent much of his life abroad, as a farmer in Argentina. Three years after Ernest was born, the Rev Francis had a third son, Arthur Maynard. He was another globetrotter, being spotted at various times in New York, Buenos Aires, Barbados and Rio de Janeiro; described as a rancher or a farmer Arthur prospered sufficiently that he left almost £40,000 in his will. Martha then gave birth to a short-lived daughter, Margaret Beatrice, before George Barkley Raikes made his appearance on 14 March 1873. He was the ninth and youngest child of the Rev Francis Raikes. Although he was born at Carleton Forehoe he was only to spend a few months there before the family moved parish. Barnham Broom and Hedenham Hall After 25 years of service at Carleton Forehoe, the Rev Francis was transferred to the nearby parish of Barnham Broom. It was slightly more populous than Carleton Forehoe, a population of 428 being reported in 1881, with a rectory valued at £604 and a church dedicated to Saints Peter & Paul. He remained in post there until he died on 10 January 1879, whilst on a trip to France (note 6) . He left the best part of £16,000 to his wife, Martha, who moved the family into The Priory at Palgrave where her uncle, Robert The church at Barnham Broom. George Raikes’ father, the Rev Francis Raikes, was rector here from 1873 until his death in 1879, when George was only five.
