to make it three wins in a row when Sussex arrived at Taunton, on July 21. After an even first innings, Somerset were set 232 to win. With Hewett accompanying Lionel to the wicket the pair rattled up 125 for the first wicket in only 66 minutes, Hewett making 84. Lionel continued and was third out at 185 having made 70, scoring ten fours and making no mistake. Somerset’s victory soon followed as they would only lose a further wicket. There was a large crowd at Taunton at the finish and the team won amidst great excitement. Somerset made it four in a row as they beat Kent at Taunton; Lionel had a poor game scoring one and none. The run was broken by Lancashire at Manchester, in a sensational match completed in one day. Having lost the first day due to rain, the game started at 11.15am on the second morning and would be all over by 6.15pm. Somerset elected to bat and were dismissed for 88, having been at one point 60 for one; the drying wicket became increasingly difficult to score runs on. Lancashire replied with 116, so Somerset entered the second innings with a deficit of 28. Lionel could only watch as Briggs and Mold ran through the side, as he carried out his bat for 22 out of 58. Lancashire easily knocked off the 31 to win. A return to form meant an easy win at Sheffield against Yorkshire. But then coming back to Taunton the team were well beaten by the eventual champions Surrey. In the first innings Lionel scored a chanceless 79, just helping to avoid the follow- on. The Morning Post reported: ‘It would be almost impossible to overpraise the nerve, and skill of his innings for in the whole duration of his innings of two and three quarter hours, in difficult batting conditions he did not give a chance.’ His innings of a six and ten fours ended with a fine catch in the deep. During the match he completed 1,000 first class runs for the season, following Arthur Shrewsbury and Andrew Stoddart, the first time he had completed this feat. After an innings victory over Nottinghamshire, in which Ted Tyler had match figures of 15 for 96, Somerset then beat Middlesex by 70 runs at Taunton. At this point in the season Somerset were placed third, having won eight matches and losing five thus having a plus three points total, well behind Surrey University and plenty of sport 33
