Going in early the next morning with the score on 95 for six, he added 53 with Hubert Bassett and after hitting some excellent drives he was eventually out at 193 having batted 80 minutes for his 54, hitting seven fours. In the second innings the Gentlemen ran up 321, and despite a century from WD Llewellyn the university could only muster 242, losing by 141 runs with Lionel making a solid 32. At least he had scored his maiden first-class 50 and had been a useful member of the bowling attack. After a heavy defeat to the MCC, the university entertained a strong Lancashire team at The Parks. Thanks to 13 wickets in the match by E Smith the university won by 11 wickets (12 a side played), Lionel contributed an attractive 45 and the newspapers commented on his pleasant style, with a panache for some powerful drives and cuts. However in the return a couple of weeks later at Old Trafford the university suffered a humiliating defeat by an innings and 69 runs. Lionel had the misfortune to bag the only pair in his career. He regained some form as against Sussex at Hove, making three and 41, the university won by 86 runs. Future Hollywood actor Charles Aubrey Smith got him out in each innings; Lionel gained part revenge as he had him stumped in the first innings. In the penultimate game before the Cambridge match, Oxford travelled to Lord’s to play the MCC.
