Lives in Cricket No 44 - LCH Palairet
on board the SS Ortega off the Maldive Islands in 1921. The most attractive fixture of the year was the visit of the MCC, played at the school on June 7 and 8. The MCC’s side included William Scotton (Nottinghamshire and England), Arnold Fothergill (Somerset and England), William Chatterton, (Derbyshire and England), Edmund Maynard (Derbyshire) and Henry Palairet (Lionel’s father). The school batted first made 56, with Lionel being bowled by Fothergill for 13. The MCC replied with 177 with Scotton (59) and Chatterton (64) making most of the runs. In reply Repton made 113 with Lionel being caught by his father off Scotton for 19; the school lost by an innings and eight runs. During the summer break Lionel appeared for Lansdown (now a suburb of Bath), and Somerset Club and Ground (most of these games were played on the county ground in Taunton); he also played for the Old Reptonians, which was made up generally of former Repton pupils who toured Derbyshire for a week annually, and were led in this year by Francis Ford. Of these games his best score was 43 for Lansdown versus Knowle Park. These matches were good for Lionel’s cricket development as he was playing LCH pictured at Repton in 1888 (middle front row with bat), his brother Richard behind to the right and CB Fry back row second from left Early life and Repton 14
