Lives in Cricket No 44 - LCH Palairet
when Lionel was run out for nought against Malvern on June 29. Whilst researching the book I have looked on Cricketarchive for non-first class match scorecards Lionel played in. There are around 50 non-first class games listed; I have researched a number of other newspapers and managed to get this total up to over 150. Throughout the book I will refer to these; one thing is certain, he does not seem to have played regularly for any one club. It is clear that he enjoyed the country estate games that were played at the time. In addition there were no leagues in the south, so often he would guest for teams. As readers will soon appreciate, he played for a lot of teams until his last known game in 1926. Other sports he played when he was young, and later work and then golf, seem to have restricted his number of non- first class matches each year to generally only a handful. By 1887 Lionel was opening the batting at Repton; against Malvern at Repton on June 7 and 8 he recorded his first known century as he made 114 and 54. The new captain of the school was Percy Farrant who like Lionel went to Oxford but would only appear in two games for the university. Sadly, he would die Repton School, December 2015, looking towards the cricket field Early life and Repton 13
