against Somerset Stragglers at Exeter. He played a lot more golf during this year; in May he won the Western Morning News individual tournament, the tenth known win in his career. For Devon he lost both his singles and foursomes at Westward Ho! in late June as Dorset beat Devon 8-7. A few days later, again at Westward Ho!, Devon easily beat Somerset 13 and a half to ten and a half; this time Lionel won his singles but again lost out in his foursomes. The return against Somerset was played at Weston super Mare a month later. Devon won more emphatically 11 and a half to six and a half; this time Lionel reversed his results, losing his singles but easily winning the foursomes. Warren also won the club team championship, as Lionel, KF Fradgley and WH Shortt brought the trophy to the club for the first time. In early 1925 he expanded his memberships on committees, to include being chairman of the Kenton and Powderham branch of the Conservative Party. However within a few months he then notified the party that he would have to stand down, as he intended to leave the parish as he planned to retire. In February, the Devon Golf Union became part of the newly formed English Golf Union and Lionel unsurprisingly joined the new committee. This now meant he was a leading figure in the promoting and arranging of golf in England. Compared to his cricket career as an administrator his golf achievements were at least on a par; it is clear his golfing achievements and committee involvement meant a lot to him. At the age of 55, though planning to retire he was still very active and pictures of him at this time still show him to be fairly slim and in good health. He appeared for Devon in four county golf games during the year. In March, Devon lost heavily 14-4 to Dorset with Lionel losing both games; later that month, even more crushingly the county went down 16-2 to Somerset; again Lionel went winless. However in late April, he did win a doubles competition partnering a ‘Mr Jenkins’. In October Lionel retired as land agent to the Earl of Devon. His retirement was reported in depth by the local press. Lord Devon thanked him for all his years of loyal service, presenting him with an inscribed silver tray.
