financially. A committee was set up including Lionel and old players Herbie Hewett, Sam Woods and John Daniell to raise funds as thanks to Murray-Anderdon, for all his years of service to Somerset. This year saw a big drop in the golf and cricket Lionel played; his handicap increased to four and there is only a record of one appearance on the cricket field. He also became the first chairman of the Devon County Golf Union. The meeting was held at the Queen’s Hotel, Exeter on October 26. The union was made up initially of 19 clubs with Lionel representing Warren. It’s from this meeting that he would be immortalised with the creation of the Palairet Cup. In February 1912, he was elected to Devon County Council, increasing his position within the community and county. His golfing career was back on track as by February he became a scratch golfer and was one of the best amateurs in the county. He won two more competitions and played over 20 various tournaments during the year. The following year he was the secretary of Warren Club, attending all Devon golfing meetings for them. He again had a successful year winning three individual tournaments and with WRC Laverton, one of his brother-in-laws, his first doubles title. In September, he made his golf county debut for Devon at Burnham-on-Sea against Somerset. Devon lost 5-3 as he lost his singles match to RW May by one hole. He was given the honour of county captain. Lionel was also active on the cricket field playing a number of single and two day games. Playing for Seaton against Upper Tooting he scored 131 and took six wickets in a two day match; he also scored two other fifties and regularly bowled his lobs. Late in the year he helped his team Warren to win the inter-club Foursomes Cup; he would repeat this feat again in 1914 and 1920, on each occasion with his old partner KF Fradgley. By 1914, he was continuing to play in a number of tournaments throughout the year. In July he again played against Somerset in a county match, now captain of Devon, and after a break for the war, he would resume the captaincy from 1920 until 1926. This time Devon won by eight and a half to three and a half. Lionel won his singles five and four against Captain Armstrong Devon, golf and the War 106
