Lives in Cricket No 43 - John Jackson

81 Last Full Season Smith gave another fine performance in the next match at Bramall Lane, Sheffield on 5 August, making 109, and, with Hayward (55) and Tarrant (42*), lifting the AEE to a score of 269 for seven, after the first innings scores had tied at 151 apiece. Jackson again didn’t bowl. The match, against XXII of the Sheffield Shrewsbury Club, finished as a draw. A party from the local Charity School attended the match by invitation of the Club Committee. Moving down to Nottinghamshire on 12 August, the AEE played XXII of Arnold on the home ground of the Duke of St Albans at Bestwood Park. The match was drawn with Smith, in a rich vein of form, being out for 99 and scoring 59 in his second innings too when the AEE, set 126 to win, finished on 92 for 6. This was the first match to be played on this newly formed ground and was a good even contest with Arnold scoring 126 and 221 and the AEE totalling 222 and 92 for 6. Tinley took 22 wickets for the AEE and George Pinder, keeping wicket stumped nine and caught one batsman. This was off Jackson who took three wickets. Apart from an appearance against XXII of Scarborough on 19, 20 and 21 August this was the end of Jackson’s cricket in 1867. Presumably fitness was becoming an increasing problem. Being dependent upon the game for his living he would obviously have played had it been possible.
