Lives in Cricket No 43 - John Jackson
79 weather delayed the start by 24 hours and, as a consequence, the game finished in a draw. The AEE made 133 and 99 for 8. Knaresborough made 68 with J.C.Shaw capturing 11 wickets. Jackson made 0 and was wicketless. At Accrington on 13 June the band of the Rifle Volunteers provided entertainment for the crowd during breaks in play which were frequent, the weather being at times, wet and threatening. Once again the match ended in a draw with J.C.Shaw taking 23 wickets and T. Hayward scoring 82 and E.Stephenson 53 for the AEE. An unusual dismissal was recorded by Haygarth for W.Lord who is shown as ‘handled the ball’ in Scores and Biographies Vol.X . The local paper says he was out lbw. Once again Jackson was wicketless. Venturing south for once the AEE next played at the Aston Ground in Birmingham where they met a Birmingham XXII who were beaten by an innings and 35 runs. Birmingham were bowled out for 59 and 65 with J.C.Shaw taking another 23 wickets and 16 Birmingham players making ducks. Again Jackson does not appear to have bowled. Only two players reached double figures. John Smith hit up 67 in the second AEE innings. With Shaw in such devastating form Jackson’s bowling was hardly needed but he did return to the bowling crease against XXII of Staveley on 24 June. The match was played on 130 yards of turf laid out at the expense of the local iron works for the recreation of of the numerous workmen there. The AEE won by 141 runs with Richard Daft scoring 49 and 34 and Carpenter making 46 in the second innings. Shaw took 14 wickets and Jackson took eight, seven of them bowled. At Halifax on 27 and 28 June the AEE beat a local XXII by ten wickets. Jackson had four wickets while Tinley and Shaw dismissed 27 batsmen. Tinley had a fine match making 40 with the consistent Carpenter adding 47* to his series of valuable innings for the AEE. 1, 2 and 3 July saw the AEE beat XXII of Enderby Park at Enderby Hall near Leicester by 47 runs in a low-scoring match. Jackson scored 2 and 0 and took no wickets. They continued their good form with a ten wickets win over XVIII of the Manchester Broughton Club on 4, 5 and 6 July, with Jackson taking seven wickets in the match and Oscroft (23) and Stephenson (59) adding 82 for the first AEE wicket. In the Manchester first innings four batsmen are listed as ‘absent’ which helps to account for their dismissal for 34 all out with their top scorer making 8. In their second innings W.Hickton defied the bowling of Shaw, who took ten wickets, Tinley and Jackson to make 46 out of 153 all out. In the match against XXII of Hull on 8 and 9 July Jackson was back to something like his best, taking eleven second innings wickets as the AEE won by an innings and 41 runs. Eight of his victims were bowled. Tarrant had done the damage in Hull’s first innings with ten wickets, their totals being 51 and 58. The fielding of the AEE was greatly admired by the large crowd. At Oldham on 11 July Jackson took twenty-two wickets in the match against an Oldham XXII. The considerable crowd of spectators were Last Full Season
